"Why", you might ask yourself, "is this site called
matze.homelinux.com but it is not run on Linux?"
The reason is, that my trusty old Linux Box which ran 24/7
since 2002 finally met its end of life through the hands of
a hacker who intruded the system.
Even though I could revive the system, I felt it would be
advisable to upgrade the OS from SuSE 8.2 to a new version.
But instead of SuSE 10 I wanted to install something
different. So I downloaded Gentoo and tried to install it.
What an odyssey! First everything booted fine from the
Life-CD, but then, when booting the newly installed system
it did not recognize the network card, therefore I could
not connect to DSL. After fiddling around with various
modules I could finally make the network card work.
So after w few days of tweaking I decided to install
Ubuntu. The installation went much smoother, in fact it
took only 25 Minutes and a few more moments to configure
the printers. However then I found out that, as nice as
Ubuntu is, it is lacking some features I needed, like an
Apache webserver. I saw myself already downloading various
packages, recompiling things and so and so forth...
So in the end I decided to get a MacMini to replace the
Linux Server all together. It took even less time to make
this machine work in my network that it took for the Ubunto
server.
But because DynDNS does not offer a domain
called "homemac.com" the site is still called
matze.homelinux.com.
There you have it. Now our home is completely Windows and
Linux free! Only iBooks, PowerBooks and a MacMini. Life can
be so easy!
